Functions

The SEDL is used to support Cospas-Sarsat activities. Typical uses are as follows:

SEDL supports the on-orbit checkout tests on the launched POES spacecraft. Tests are documented in accordance with Cospas-Sarsat (C/S) document T.004. These tests double as Commissioning tests for the spacecraft.

Routine monitoring of the SAR links per requests from the USMCC.

Periodic retesting of the SAR links. A subset of the post launch tests as listed in C/S T.004 need to redone on a periodic basis to verify that the LEOSAR and GEOSAR systems are working properly

In the future, Cospas-Sarsat commissioning test will be performed on the GOES –N-Q series of spacecraft.

SEDL has, in the past, supported tests such as the GEOSAR Demonstration and Evaluation Tests, to confirm assumptions about the Geosynchronous system.

SEDL supports the investigation of system problems including EMI investigations. LEOLUT required for in band EMI investigations of Polar Operational Environmental Satellites (POES).

SEDL supports the development of new systems or concepts such as the repeater on Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites (GOES) or self-locating beacons. The SEDL contributes by prototyping new system concepts or participating in tests studying the concepts and issues.

The SEDL supports the international development of the Cospas-Sarsat system specifications, test procedures, and documentation.
