MARCH 2009 Location of detected distress signal: Description:
 
3/25/2009 35 NM south of Freeport, Texas The fishing vessel Margie T, with three persons on board, became disabled and manually activated their EPIRB. The Coast Guard District 8 Rescue Coordination Center launched the cutter Skipjack, which located and towed the disabled vessel back to Freeport.

3/24/2009 65 NM east of Cape May, New Jersey The snow machine traveler ran out of fuel on his way from Point Hope to Point Lay, Alaska. Due to the extreme cold weather, the traveler activated his PLB. North Slope Borough Search and Rescue responded and deployed a two snow machine ground team. They found the traveler and took him to Point Lay with no injuries.

3/20/2009 Near Point Hope, Alaska Coast Guard LANTAREA Rescue Coordination Center received the SARSAT alert and launched a helicopter and a fixed wing aircraft to the scene. Additionally the USCGC Dependable and USCGC Finback were launched to search the area. The Coast Guard helicopter recovered three of the seven missing crew members of the fishing vessel Lady Mary which had sunk. One was alive, two were deceased. The Coast Guard resumed the search for the remaining four crewmembers at first light. No other crew memnbers were found.

3/19/2009 30 NM northeast of Wainwright, Alaska A snow machine traveler activated his PLB when he encountered mechanical problems with the snow machine. The traveler was on his way from Wainwright to Barrow, Alaska in extremely cold weather. North Slope Borough Search and Rescue launched a helicopter to the scene. The snow machine traveler was picked up and transported to Barrow. There were no injuries.

3/19/2009 30 NM northeast of Wainwright, Alaska A snow machine traveler activated his PLB when he encountered mechanical problems with the snow machine. 3/16/2009 85 NM west of Clearwater, Florida The incident was on 16 March when the COSPAS-SARSAT system detected a 406 MHz distress signal 85 NM west of Clearwater, Florida.  The fishing vessel Dolphine II with two persons on board experienced a loss of power.  The crew activated their EPIRB.  The Coast Guard District 7 received the SARSAT alert and launched both a helicopter and a fixed wing aircraft to the SARSAT location.  The fixed wing aircraft located the disabled vessel.  A vessel in the area responded to the call outs from the Coast Guard aircraft and assisted the distressed vessel.

3/08/2009 St. George Island, Alaska Coast Guard Communication Station Kodiak had received a Mayday call from the fishing vessel Mar-Gun with 5 persons on board.  The vessel was aground on St. George Island, Alaska.  The Coast Guard asked them to turn the EPIRB on for location.  The Coast Guard launched a helicopter from St. Paul Island, Alaska to the SARSAT position.  The five persons onboard sustained no injuries, but were transported to St. Paul Medical Clinic.

3/05/2009 Near Nuiqsut, Alaska The Alaska Rescue Coordination Center received the SARSAT alert and notified North Slope Borough of the PLB activation.  A hunter activated his PLB when his snow machine became disabled.  The outside temperature was around -36F.  The hunter was rescued by two volunteers from a ground team from Nuiqsut, Alaska.  He sustained no injuries.
