MARCH 2007 Location of detected distress signal: Description:
3/30/07 Bermuda

Coast Guard San Juan received the Sarsat alert and launched a C-130 to the position where they found the SV Kairos II had lost its mast. The crew of the C-130 established communications with the vessel and were told that the vessel had insufficient fuel to make its next destination. The crew of the C-130 found a Good Samaritan vessel and directed it to provide fuel to the distressed vessel. The Kairos II then departed. After turning off their EPIRB, the crew determined that they were provided the wrong type of fuel. The crew reactivated the EPIRB and the Coast Guard arranged for another Good Samaritan to provide the correct fuel. The SV Kairos II is now underway to Bermuda.

3/28/07 Bar Harbor, Maine The two crewmen of the Fishing Vessel Luke and Jodi abandoned their vessel when it began taking on water. The two crewmen were picked up by a station boat from Westlake Harbor.

3/27/07 Nuiqsut, Alaska

An individual activated a PLB after getting lost in a blizzard. The individual was located by the Nuiqsut Search and Rescue ground team and transported to the village.

3/23/07 Curry County, Oregon

 A 54 year old man activated his 406 MHz PLB when he suffered a compound fracture in his right leg and was going into shock. The Air Force Rescue Coordination Center received the SARSAT alert and contacted the Coast Guard Station North Bend. Coast Guard launched a helicopter which arrived on the scene and transported the injured man to a waiting ambulance for transport to a local hospital.

3/22/07 Nassau, Bahamas

The COSPAS-SARSAT system detected a 406 MHz distress signal 80 NM northeast of Nassau, Bahamas. Coast Guard District 7 received the SARSAT alert with an encoded location. Coast Guard launched a helicopter. The crew of the helicopter located the disabled Sailing Vessel Broom Helda. The weather prevented the helicopter crew from picking up the two people. Coast Guard contacted a vessel in the area, M/V Castillo de Arevalo, and diverted the vessel to the disabled sailing vessel. The Good Samaritan vessel was able to establish communications with the disabled sailing vessel with the use of lights, as the sailing vessel had lost battery power. Once the weather cleared the Coast Guard launched a helicopter to the scene. The helicopter crew were able to hoist the two people and a dog aboard the helicopter and transport them to Nassau.

3/21/07 Yankeetown, Florida

The Fishing Vessel Fish ‘N. Tails activated their distress beacon when they lost power. Coast Guard sector St. Petersburg established communications with a nearby vessel, the F/V Hook Em’ High, and diverted them to assist the disabled fishing vessel. The Fishing Vessel Hook ‘Em High arrived on the scene and took the disabled fishing vessel in tow. The vessel was safely towed to the Steinhatchee River docks.

3/9/07 Maui, Hawaii

The COSPAS-SARSAT system detected a 406 MHz distress signal 5 NM southwest of Maui, Hawaii.  Coast Guard District 14 asked the operator of the Sailing Vessel the Emelina to activate his distress beacon as the sailing vessel was disabled and adrift. Coast Guard launched a 47 foot boat to the scene. The Coast Guard vessel arrived on the scene and  found the disabled sailing vessel taking on water. The sailing vessels bilge pumps were able to control the flooding. The Coast Guard vessel towed the disabled sailing vessel back to Ma`alaes.

3/6/07 Everglades City, Florida

The operator of a 16 foot Hobie Cat sailing vessel activated his PLB when the vessel was demasted. Coast Guard District Seven launched a helicopter to the scene. The helicopter crew located the disabled vessel and hoisted the two persons aboard the helicopter and transported them to Marathon , Florida . There were no injuries.

3/5/07 Corpus Christi, Texas

The crew of the Fishing Vessel Stryker activated their distress beacon after the vessel sustained electrical problems and lost communications due to dead batteries. Coast Guard District Eight diverted two Coast Guard vessels to the scene. One of the Coast Guard vessels towed the disabled fishing vessel to port.

2/21/07 Barrow, Alaska

Two persons were traveling in a pick up truck from Deadhorse , Alaska to Barrow, Alaska when they nearly ran out of fuel. The outside temperature was minus 30 degrees with white out conditions. North Slope Borough Search and Rescue flew a helicopter to the scene. The helicopter crew located the vehicle. One of the travelers was transported to Barrow to procure fuel. The fuel was brought back to the truck and the travelers continued their journey.

2/20/07  

The Fishing Vessel Jade Alaska was struck by a large wave and sunk. The crew abandoned their vessel. Coast Guard District 17 received the SARSAT alert and launched a helicopter to the scene. The crew of the helicopter found the three crewmembers in a life raft wearing survival suits.. The helicopter flew the crew of the sunken vessel to safety.
