6/30/2008 Cape Cod

The sailing vessel Patriot activated its EPIRB because one of its crew members was suffering from dehydration and had gone into shock.  The Coast Guard District 1 Rescue Coordination Center launched a helicopter and a fixed wing aircraft.  The aircraft gathered medical information and determined that the crew member needed to be evacuated.  A call for assistance was sent and the C/S Norwegian Dawn responded.  The cruise ship arrived on scene in two hours and admitted the sick crewmember to its medical facilities.

6/29/2008 Hawaii Kai

The vessel Kaela O ran aground with one person on board.  Coast Guard District 14 notified the Hawaii police department who rescued the person.

6/27/2008 Barnegat Light, New Jersey

The owner/operator of the fishing vessel Monty's Toy manually activated his 406 MHz EPIRB when his vessel lost power.  Coast Guard LANTAREA Rescue Coordination Center launched a helicopter from Air Station Atlantic City.  Also Coast Guard Station Barnegat Light launched two boats to the area.  The helicopter arrived on scene and lowered a radio to the distressed vessel.  Sea Tow offered a battery, so the Coast Guard helicopter returned and picked up the battery and delivered it to the distressed vessel.  The Coast Guard boats arrived on scene and escorted the distressed vessel under its own power to port.

6/27/2008 Marshall Islands

The sailing vessel Elsewhere ran aground off Aur Atoll.  The Coast Guard sent out a request for assistance.  A Good Samaritan vessel, the yacht Blue, Star arrived on scene and assisted the crew of the distressed vessel to refloat their vessel.

6/21/2008 Judith, Rhode Island

The vessel Whileaway had an engine fire and contacted the Coast Guard.   The Coast Guard instructed a crewmember to activate his EPIRB.  The Coast Guard launched both a small boat and a helicopter to the scene.  The Coast Guard arrived on scene and found that the fire was extinguished.  The small boat remained on scene with the vessel to wait for it to be towed.

6/19/2008 Fire Island, New York Coast Guard District 1 Rescue Coordination Center received an unlocated alert for the pleasure craft Canyon Bound.  Shortly thereafter Coast Guard Sectors New York and Long Island Sound received a MAYDAY call from the vessel.  The owner/operator stated that they were fishing when the vessel began taking on water.  Coast Guard District 1 then received a SARSAT alert with a location about 17 NM south of Fire Island, New York.  Coast Guard Station Long Island Sound asked Station Fire Island to launch a boat to search the area and also diverted a helicopter to the area.  The helicopter arrived on scene and sighted 2 persons in a life raft.  The crew of the helicopter hoisted the two persons aboard the helicopter and transported them to Station Fire Island.

6/15/2008 Fire Island, New York Coast Guard District 1 Rescue Coordination Center received a SARSAT alert from a pleasure craft named On Trial.  The distress beacon was activated when the vessel became disabled.  The Coast Gurd launched a fixed wing aircraft which located the disabled vessel.  New York Station Fire Island launched a boat which towed the disabled vessel into port.

6/15/2008 Cape Cod, Massachusetts Coast Guard LANTAREA Rescue Coordination Center received a 406 MHz alert from a capsized racing rowboat named Scilly Boys with a crew of four.  The rowboat had capsized in rough weather.  Coast Guard launched a fixed wing aircraft which located the rowboat.  A Good Samaritan vessel, the tanker Gulf Grace was diverted to the rowboat’s location.  The tanker rescued all four persons from the rowboat.

6/11/2008  

On 11 June when Coast Guard District 7 Rescue Coordination Center received an INMARSAT phone call from the owner/operator of the fishing vessel Antoinette Marie stating they were taking on water.  The Coast Guard asked them to manually activate their 406 MHz EPIRB and diverted the USCG cutter Mohawk to the area.  The fishing vessel was located by the cutter.  The Coast Guard cutter crew assisted in dewatering the vessel and repairing the source of the flooding.  The fishing vessel was later towed into port by a Honduran Navy vessel.

6/10/2008 Richardson, Washington

The sailing vessel Lost Adventurer, with one person on board, was in distress and taking on water.  The Coast Guard District 13 Rescue Coordination Center launched a small boat from Bellingham Station and a larger boat from the Port Angeles Station.  The person was rescued with no injuries.

6/8/2008 St. John’s Newfoundland

Coast Guard LANTAREA Rescue Coordination Center received a 406 MHz alert from the French flagged sailing vessel Motus. The crew of the Motus activated the vessel's EPIRB to request a medevac for the captain who had hurt his back. This medevac, coordinated by RCC Halifax, Canada, was completed by the merchant vessel Maersk Dunedin. The other qualified skipper and remaining two crew members stayed on board the Motus.

6/8/2008 Laie, Hawaii

The COSPAS-SARSAT system detected their EPIRB 126 NM Northeast of Laie, Hawaii.  The fishing vessel had suffered an electrical fire and subsequent leaks,  The Coast Guard launched a fixed wing aircraft and the Coast Guard Cutter Ahi to the scene.  Pumps were dropped from the fixed wing aircraft and no further assistance was required.

6/5/2008 Marsh Island, Louisiana

The beacon on the fishing vessel St. Michael was activated when two of the three crewmembers became sick.  Coast Guard District 8 received an unlocated alert and through contact with the owner was able to determine the position of the vessel.  The owner reported that the captain could safely navigate the vessel on his own.  The Coast Guard briefed the flight surgeon and Air Station New Orleans launched a helicopter to the scene.   The crew of the helicopter located the vessel and hoisted the two sick crewmembers aboard.  The two crewmembers were airlifted to Lafayette General Medical Center.
