JUNE 2011
Date of Rescue:
Location of detected distress signal:
Description:
06/01/2011
Approx. 265 NM east of Virginia Beach, Virginia
The COSPAS-SARSAT system detected a 406 MHZ PLB distress signal approximately 265 NM east of Virginia Beach, Virginia. A solo sailor traveling from Little Creek, Virginia to Scotland turned back after his sailing vessel, the Lancastrian, sustained steering damage during adverse weather. He made his way through adverse weather and remained awake for four days. After he provided conflicting positions, Coast Guard District 5 directed him to activate his EPIRB. Using the SARSAT location, District 5 launched a cutter and a fixed wing aircraft to the scene. The fixed wing aircraft and a nearby merchant ship, the Master, kept radio communication with the Lancastrian until other Coast Guard assets arrived. The Coast Guard Cutter Tampa arrived on scene, checked on the sailor and towed the distressed vessel until it was relieved by the Coast Guard Cutter Cochito off the coast of Cape Henry, Virginia.

One SARSAT Rescue.
